Death toll in Jamaica from Nicole now stands at 12

Kingston, Agency
The number of people killed in Jamaica as a result of the passage of Tropical Storm Nicole has risen to 12, authorities said Thursday.

To the nine fatalities tallied as of Wednesday, three more were added on Thursday due to the collapse of a house under construction as intense rains continue to deluge the Caribbean island.

Apparently, three men lost their lives when the house under construction collapsed while they were sleeping in one section of it.

Authorities reported that eight people remain missing from storm-related causes and they also are feared to have died, although that has not been officially confirmed.

Serious damage has been reported to highways, houses and bridges in several towns around the country, as well as heavy destruction of crops and livestock.

At least 400 people have had to take refuge in shelters and hundreds of thousands of people remain without electricity in their homes due to the storm.

Nine of the 12 people confirmed killed so far drowned when they were swept away by swift currents associated with flooding brought on by Nicole's torrential rains.

Six members of one family died when their house was swept away by rising waters in the capital neighborhood of Liguanea, although neighbors managed to rescue a seventh member of that family.
