Sao Paulo, AgencyBrazilian Vice President Jose Alencar suffered a severe heart attack in the Sao Paulo hospital where he was admitted last month for intestinal complications to his case of abdominal cancer, though medical authorities describe his current state as "stable."
Alencar, according to a communique from the Sirio Libanes Hospital, showed signs early Thursday evening of "feeling ill and was diagnosed as suffering a severe myocardial infarction."
The 78-year-old politician was inserted with a catheter "that showed no significant arterial obstructions," the note from the hospital said.
After the procedure, Alencar was moved to the hospital's cardiology intensive care unit.
On Monday, Alencar was again able to eat normally, after two weeks of receiving his nutrition through feeding tubes.
In September, the vice president was admitted for a respiratory crisis from an edema caused by chemotherapy, and in July he was catheterized to treat a cardiac ischemia, a local deficiency of the blood supply due to some arterial vasoconstriction or obstruction.
The politician has been fighting abdominal cancer since 1997, and since then has undergone 16 surgical operations, three of them last year.
Due to his health problems, Alarcon decided to remain as vice president and not take part in last October's elections, unlike some ministers in the Brazilian Cabinet who resigned to run for presidential, legislative or regional office.
Besides being a politician, Alencar is a prosperous businessman in the textile industry and owner of the Coteminas group, which has factories in Brazil and other countries.
