Number of Haiti dead from cholera reaches 544

The death toll from cholera in Haiti has grown to 544, while 8,138 people have been hospitalized, the Public Health Ministry said Monday.

With 393 deaths and 6,423 people hospitalized, the northern province of Artibonite remains the area hardest hit by the epidemic, while in Nord province 52 deaths have been confirmed and 404 people are hospitalized.

In the eastern province of Plateau Central 44 have died, while 623 were hospitalized, and in Nord-Ouest province, 35 people died and 465 have been taken to hospital.

In Ouest province, which includes Port-au-Prince, the number of fatalities remains unchanged at 20, while 223 people have been hospitalized.

Haiti's other five provinces have not been affected by the epidemic.
